Keith's Television Talks #1: Disventure Camp

KeithNewbern 3 weeks ago

I want to talk about a lot of different shows but I thought I'd start off talking about television shows by covering a YouTube Series I'm sure a lot of Total Drama fans know (note: I will talk about Total Drama in the future) Honestly I found the show really predictable, not very well written and unlike Total Drama where when the Drama is bad, the jokes are at least good and the characters keep me invested even if it's not well written, Disventure Camp is kind of bad. Not to shun the creators at all, it's impressive from a YouTube series standpoint but as a product, most seasons end up being really samey. Notably the fact that every premerge is the exact same: 1 somewhat interesting man goes first boot, 2nd boot is usually a pretty interesting, most likely villainous female character (but that female character will come back at the merge) then 2 more male boots of usually at least one really fantastic character that gets wasted for no reason (notably Nick and Ted) and then we have 1-2 other women going home (Ashley and Lill for season 1, Maggy for season 2 and Lynda and Ivy for season 4) and the only frustration I have is that even when the genders are uneven coming into merge, only 1 man has ever won back into the game out of I think 4 or 5 comebacks. Not to say it has to be a man, but almost every season the women get a huge amount of screentime and usually are written quite well while the men are usually boring or horribly unlikeable. The other problem is that only the men in showmances get to get deep into the game with Alec as the sole exception. I wish the show would explore more of the men on the seasons. But I think the women are consistently the best part of the show, which is why I even bring up the gender problem. Because my god, so many good female characters: Grett, Miriam, Rosa, Ivy, Jade, Isabel, etc. Like I could go on, they're amazing and I just wish the whole cast could be given similar amounts of quality writing as it feels very one sided on who gets the good plots and characters. As for the seasons, I'd rank them like this: 1. Season 1 - by far the best written and tightest plot. 2. Season 4 - I have a lot of problems with it but it might have the best cast of any season. 3. Season 2 - Despite a lot of problems, its... fine I suppose 4. Season 3: All Stars - I do not understand doing an all stars this early and this season proved why it shouldn't exist constantly. Beyond that, I do really hope season 5 is strong, the designs are quite nice. And for the positives of the show: The writing can be strong at times, the production value is really good and the overall strategy in particular is a huge jump up from anything on Total Drama. I'd say if you don't mind a bit of missed potential, check the show out Keith's Series Score: 6.5/10
