that’s normal, it’s MacBooks operating system that needs space by default. Best thing you can try is just clearing the cache and browser cache, that sometimes takes up unnecessary space if you haven’t cleared it in a while. Also empty the trash if you’ve recently deleted files to clean space it’s not automatic Other than that can’t think of anything, keep the firstborn 😌✋
chatgpt is a blessing isnt it maxora...
What those categories mean (in human language) 🧠 macOS (35 GB) This is: The operating system itself Core system apps Essential frameworks 👉 You cannot delete this 👉 30–40 GB is normal on modern macOS So: annoying, but not the real problem. 🧩 System Data (65 GB) ← THIS is the problem “System Data” is basically macOS saying: “Here’s a giant junk drawer of stuff we don’t want to explain.” It usually includes: App caches (can be HUGE) Old iOS backups Log files Temporary files Old macOS update leftovers Mail attachments Xcode junk (if you ever installed it) Time Machine local snapshots Safari / Chrome / Spotify caches This is the one you can shrink. Step-by-step: how to free space (safe methods) ✅ 1. Restart first (seriously) This alone can clear several GB of temp files. Restart your Mac Then check Storage again Sometimes “System Data” drops instantly. ✅ 2. Delete old iPhone / iPad backups (biggest win) These hide inside “System Data”. Finder method: Open Finder Click your Mac name (top of sidebar) Go to General → Storage Click the ⓘ next to iOS Files Delete old backups you don’t need 💥 This can free 10–30 GB instantly ✅ 3. Clear caches (safe if done correctly) Manual cache cleanup: Open Finder Press Cmd + Shift + G Paste: ~/Library/Caches Select everything inside (NOT the folder itself) Move to Trash Empty Trash Then repeat for: /Library/Caches (You may need your password.) ⚠️ Don’t delete random system folders — just what’s inside Caches. ✅ 4. Check for Time Machine local snapshots macOS secretly keeps backups even without a drive plugged in. To check (Terminal): Open Terminal Paste: tmutil listlocalsnapshots / If there are many, remove them: sudo tmutil thinlocalsnapshots / 9999999999 4 This can free many GBs. ✅ 5. Mail app attachments (hidden storage hog) If you use Apple Mail: Open Mail Mail → Settings → Accounts Set Download Attachments to Recent or None Old attachments can sit in System Data forever. ✅ 6. Developer junk (if you ever used Xcode) If you ever installed Xcode, it leaves MASSIVE leftovers. Check: ~/Library/Developer Xcode caches alone can be 20+ GB. What NOT to do ❌ ❌ Don’t try to delete “macOS” ❌ Don’t delete random folders in /System ❌ Don’t use sketchy “Mac cleaner” apps Reality check (important) macOS storage numbers: Are not always accurate Update slowly Sometimes need a reboot to recalculate It’s very common to see: System Data at 50–100 GB Then suddenly drop to 20–30 GB after cleanup + restart TL;DR (fast plan) If you want the fastest results: Restart Mac Delete old iOS backups Clear ~/Library/Caches Check Time Machine snapshots That usually frees 20–40 GB. If you want, tell me: MacBook model + year macOS version Whether you use Xcode / Adobe / Spotify / Chrome heavily I can tailor this exactly to your setup and get you space back fast 💻✨
Bagel Thanks for making my town's water brown for this.
PosterBoy no problem :3 i hope they fix it soon!
Put it in rice
Do not delete MacOS. That's literally the software running on your computer. That would be like deleting iOS off your phone. It wouldn't be able to do anything. System Data is likely your system settings, etc. Idk if you can delete anything here. For it to be taking up more than the OS it's prob something important. Delete videos from the inappropriate folder you have on your desktop and you should be good.
You can't delete macOS. That's your operating system that makes the whole system functional
TheRiddler Okay... so what about system data
Kodua system data is all your files and browsing history that saves all your passwords and things like that
