PSA on colon cancer
trigger warning: health shit
my college bestie had been struggling with IBS and PCOS. she’s 25 and went and got a colonoscopy and they found 3 precancerous polyps which would’ve become cancer in 5-10 years. she’s very healthy and fit btw
she convinced to get me one (i was getting a surgery anyway and my mom had polyps) and got it today. anyway, i also had 4 precancerous polyps which got removed ofc. am pretty healthy and have been at a good weight since freshman year of college.
anyway, my point here is for those who have access to healthcare please go get checked. american food (even our fruits and veggies) and corporate greed is killing us all. it’s one of the few preventable cancers via early detection but doctors sometimes won’t take your symptoms seriously because you’re “too young”.
i believe the standard age for screening is 55 for healthy ppl and 45 with family history. honestly, it should be a lot lower for certain folks but insurance companies don’t want to pay for it.
BTW the bill was $11,000…. paid $2k cuz of insurance which is a deal i guess
EDIT: also please read Poof’s comment, he is an expert in the field

Hi! I had someone recently diagnosed with colon cancer. I also currently work at a T3 Academic Institute and Health Center - specifically in cancer genetics. I completely agree with what you said, however, getting a colonoscopy is a lot harder for people who are under the medically recommended age. Most providers won’t refer for a colonoscopy and GIs won’t typically complete them without a referral and especially for people who aren’t considered medically necessary. What a lot of people don’t know is if you have a first degree relative dx w colon cancer, you can typically start colonoscopies at around 10 years minus their diagnosis age. Also some people may be able to get colonoscopies for other genetic abnormalities such as diagnosis of lynch syndrome or any FAP diagnosis OR any family history of multiple polyps.
