Some republicans genuinely believe they are not homophobic or racism because they have cognitive dissonance that allows them to believe their blatantly bigoted opinions are somehow not bigoted because they’re able to tolerate people in the minority groups.
The reality is that as a political movement, Republicans are supporting and accepting an administration that portrays certain minority groups as threats while backing legislation that undermines their rights and safety.
In 2020 I cut out an entire portion of my family because of this lack of ability to realize how harmful their views are. They were baffled that I didn’t want to come to their Christmas party with my boyfriend at the time who was Chinese…while actively and DAILY posting homophobic memes on Facebook as well as blatantly racist COVID misinformation against Chinese people.
They were baffled because they loved “me” and couldn’t understand how they were racism and homophobic while actively acting that way. Republicans are ultimately selfish and cannot empathize with anyone, or anything, unless they are directly impacted.

It's crazy like, even if you can delude yourself into believing you aren't a bigot while supporting bigoted ideals, you have to make the conscious choice that bigotry is not a deal breaker for you
